The Iwari Take a Stand
Deep in the Amazon, Komachi’s army of logging equipment made its way through the forest, ripping up everything in its path. High above, screeching macaws scattered into the grey haze as the machines edged closer to the village boundary.
Terrified but desperate to protect their ancestral territory, the Iwari villagers lined up directly across the path, forming a human wall.
Taynara stood bravely at the very front of the line, her chest heaving, her eyes glowing with a fierce, protective light as she shouted, “Go! The forest does not want you here!”
Then the fantasy shattered, and reality rushed back.
None of it was real. It was all in Taynara’s imagination.
In truth, Taynara was a terrified ten-year-old girl, cowering behind a thick fern, her knees shaking as she clutched her arms around herself in raw terror.
The truck brakes screeched, throwing up a choking cloud of red dust. Diesel smoke hung thick over the clearing, biting at Taynara’s throat as the roar of the bulldozers rattled the ground beneath her feet.
From the lead truck stepped a man in a filthy, sweat-stained shirt. He had rough, dirt-encrusted hands and a crooked, cruel grin. It was Komachi.
He sneered as he drew a heavy iron bar from the cab, walking slowly toward the front line, completely unfazed by the crowd of indigenous defenders.
“Move, or we make you move,” Komachi growled.
Seeing his people threatened, Taynara’s grandfather stepped forward, holding his hands out in peace.
“You must stop,” the old man said, his voice soft but holding a quiet weight above the engine roar. “This forest is our home.”
Komachi didn’t hesitate, nor did he slow his stride. Stepping forward with cold, practiced dismissal, he lunged out and shoved the elder back with brutal force.
The old man lost his footing in the loose dirt, crashing backward and striking his head hard against a jagged, exposed rock at the edge of the path. He went motionless instantly, lying still in the red dust.
Before anyone could process what had happened, a panicked logger fired a deafening warning shot straight into the sky—a sharp, violent CRACK that sent the crowd into absolute chaos.
Shouts erupted through the clearing. Smoke billowed as the bulldozers lurched forward, and the frightened villagers scattered into the treeline to escape the advancing steel.
“Grandfather!” Taynara screamed.
Breaking cover and ignoring the villagers fleeing past her, Taynara sprinted against the crowd. She dropped to her knees in the dirt beside him, her hands trembling as she grabbed his shoulders.
“Grandfather, wake up! Please, wake up!” she pleaded, shaking him gently, her voice cracking against the roar of the engines. His eyes remained closed, his breath completely gone. “Grandfather!”
Screeech!
Out of nowhere, a terrifying, golden-emerald blur erupted from the upper canopy. It was Ka’a. With a deafening, metallic shriek, the massive Harpy Eagle swooped down like a falling star, his razor-sharp talons striking hard across Komachi’s jaw. The sheer force of the strike sent the heavy logging boss crashing sideways into the red mud.
“Shoot it! Shoot that monster!” one of the loggers screamed, raising his rifle in sheer panic.
The terrified gunman fired a wild, deafening volley into the air at the giant bird. But right before the lead could touch his feathers, Ka’a dissolved instantly into a brilliant, shimmering swirl of emerald and gold mist, vanishing into thin air.
The gunman’s jaw dropped, his hands shaking violently as he backed away. “It’s… it’s a ghost!”
Humiliated, Komachi scrambled to his feet, clutching his bruised face as he spat mud from his mouth. His eyes burned with demonic rage. “It’s just a trick!” Komachi roared, waving his hand frantically toward the village. “Out of the trucks! Clear them out! Burn the huts!” Komachi roared, waving his hand frantically.
On command, armed men leaped from the flatbeds, heavy rifles raised as torches flared to life. The men opened fire, shooting a terrifying volley of bullets into the air and trees. The deafening cracks shattered the sky. Panicking, the villagers scattered, screaming as they scrambled into the thick bushes for cover.
Bullets tore through the foliage above as the villagers fled deeper into the wild. Taynara ran through the chaos, tears streaming down her face as thick, black smoke began to rise from the village center. The loggers were throwing torches onto the ancestral homes, burning their entire lives to ash.
She had been too afraid to stand up. She had been too afraid to help. And now it was too late!
The heavy weight of guilt settled deep into her chest–she felt as though her grandfather’s fall was entirely her fault.
