Star Kids: Sacred Roots

By Ren Wilder

Chapter 1:
The Heart of the Amazon

Deep within the lush, untamed canopy of the Maranhão forest in northeastern Brazil, the Iwari tribe lived in absolute harmony with the earth. To them, the forest was not just a collection of trees but a living, sacred entity vibrating with ancestral spirits. Every animal was a family member, and the winding rivers were their lifelines.

Among them was Taynara, a small ten-year-old girl who shared a bond with the jungle deeper than anyone else.

As a young child, Taynara’s favorite moments were the long walks she took with her grandfather, the respected elder of the Iwari. Hand-in-hand, they would wander deep beneath the towering canopy to their favorite spot—a colossal, ancient hardwood tree whose roots ran deep into the earth.

Whenever she was with her grandfather, the forest felt magically alive. The damp moss beneath their feet seemed to glow, and the leaves whispered sweet secrets in the wind.

“Do you feel it, little Akila?” her grandfather would ask, calling her by her tribal spiritual name. “The forest is a mirror. If you look with your soul, you will see its true light.”

“I see it, Grandfather!” Taynara would laugh, watching the golden sunbeams dance like playful spirits through the branches.

“One day, you will see it even clearer,” he promised, his wise eyes shining. “And you will protect this sanctuary forever.”

Yet, even as a brave girl of the forest, Taynara harbored a deep, embarrassing secret. She was absolutely, utterly terrified of snakes. While she could track jaguars and climb the tallest trees, the mere sight of a harmless garden snake would make her screech and scramble away. The other children in her tribe often teased her about it, laughing whenever she jumped at a rustling vine. It was her ultimate, hidden weakness – A weakness she would one day have to face.

Years later, when Taynara was ten, she stood high on a mossy ridge overlooking the vast sea of green. Looking out into the dense canopy, she pursed her lips and let out a sharp, unique whistle—a secret call known only to one.

For a moment, the jungle fell deathly silent. Then, the peace was cut open by a terrifying, mysterious rushing sound. A heavy, loud gust of air whipped through the trees, making the thick ferns dance violently and sending a chill down the spine of anyone who didn’t know the wild. It sounded like a sudden, invisible storm or a giant spirit sweeping through the shadows, creating a scary, breathless mystery in the heart of the woods.
Suddenly, bursting right through the wall of rushing air and thick leaves, a massive, majestic Harpy Eagle swooped down. This was Ka’a, her cosmic spirit guardian. Far larger than any earthly bird, Ka’a settled heavily on the mossy ground right beside her, his crown feathers pulsing with golden light. His emerald eyes, with golden star-like centers, locked onto Taynara’s.
Taynara smiled, the scary tension melting away instantly as she ran her hand along his emerald and gold feathers. In the quiet safety of the deep jungle, protected by the giant of the skies, she felt invincible. The forest was her soul.
